KNIFE in Shining Armor

Overcoming The Shock of Deception

Knife in Shining Armor: Overcoming The Shock of Deception

This is not just a story about a failed marriage.

This is a reckoning.

Eight months. That’s all it took. Eight short months married to an emotionally abusive pastor—and the damage was so severe it triggered the aftermath of years of psychological compartmentalization.

Emotional domestic violence does not need time to mature; it only needs proximity, access, and unchecked authority.

This story confronts a truth society is still unwilling to name: covert emotional domestic violence—the abuse thrives because it leaves no bruises. It does not bleed. It is not photographic. And because of that, it is routinely dismissed—by families, churches, and court systems that require physical evidence to validate invisible wounds. If there are no marks on the body, the pain is often ruled irrelevant.

But the nervous system remembers mind fractures,

and the spirit absorbs what the law refuses to recognize.

Knife in Shining Armor exposes how emotional abuse hides in plain sight—especially in spiritual environments.

It addresses how individuals can stand before congregations preaching righteousness while privately operating beneath Godly protocol.

Traditionally, memoirs and self-help commentary are developed separately.

One tells the story.

The other teaches.

I chose to blend the two genres because—

Emotional abuse does not follow structure, and healing does not respect genre boundaries. Emotional abuse does not live neatly in categories, and neither does healing. Survivors do not need inspiration alone—they need instruction.

They need language for what happened to them.

They need wisdom to avoid repeating the cycles.

And they need a road map for recovery when the relationship ends.

This story gives words to experiences never labeled.

It explains dynamics that felt confusing, destabilizing, and isolating—

not just at home, but within the congregation.

KISA includes a glossary—because language matters for psychological survival.

This book is for the person who’s still questioning their reality.

For the ones who were left to clean up emotional wreckage.

For the survivor who left—and still aches.

And for those who stayed too long because they were trained to believe endurance was a virtue.

Individuals do not need to be told to “Just move on!”

They need a road map.

A knife does not stop being dangerous because it shines.

And abuse does not stop being abuse because it's covert.

Some walls that keep us in bondage are walls we can see - and at other times, there are invisible walls… walls of abuse and manipulation that aren’t always visible, yet they are present. I believe this book will help to break those walls for people who have been trapped in abusive marriage relationships, or even in moments we have put up walls because we are scared to come out and scared to let others in. Allow this book to ‘speak’ to your heart and give you the courage to break free from the bondage. Karen is a ‘picture of possibility’… and you can be free as well.

I commend Ms. Karen Hatch for courageously sharing her truth. Knife in Shining Armor’ is a riveting account of her journey through an emotionally abusive relationship. In today’s world of social media, the term narcissist is often overused and misapplied, leaving its true meaning blurred—just as those who fit the description would prefer, allowing them to remain hidden in plain sight. In this book, Karen takes you through her personal experiences that were often dismissed by the deception of a carefully crafted mask. She offers readers a compelling glimpse into the reality of a compulsive love relationship, exposing both the inevitable damage inflicted by another’s pathology and the deep, traumatic impact it had on her survival. Tragically, her story also exposes the dark undercurrents of power and control sought by such individuals, particularly those cloaked in positions of spiritual authority within the sacredspace of the church. Well done!

"Knife in a Shining Armor is the bomb and a page turner. There are books you read and then there are books that pull you in. From the beginning of the book, the author takes you an emotional journey of her toxic relationship/divorce. The author doesn't sugarcoat anything. The story telling is raw and honest which makes the book captivating. I highly recommend reading. I can't wait for Tyler Perry to get a hold of this book!"

Relationships can be fleeting yet deeply impactful; it is both an honor and a privilege to introduce this poignant narrative by Karen Hatch. Her story—a candid reflection on the joys, struggles, and ultimate dissolution of a brief marriage—offers a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the complexities of love and loss. As someone accustomed to a more formal mode of expression, I find the simplicity and emotional directness of Karen’s prose strikingly powerful, inviting readers to connect with her journey on an intimate level. This book traces Karen’s path through the hopeful beginnings of her marriage, the unforeseen challenges that tested her resilience, and the painful yet liberating end of a union that shaped her in profound ways. Through straightforward language and heartfelt storytelling, she captures the universal emotions of longing, disappointment, and personal growth. The narrative doesn’t shy away from the raw realities of a short-term relationship marked by unmet expectations; instead, it offers readers a relatable lens through which to explore themes of self-discovery, forgiveness, and the courage to move forward. What makes Karen’s work remarkable is its accessibility. Written for those who have loved, lost, or sought to understand the intricacies of human connection. This book uses clear, unadorned language that resonates deeply without being overwhelming. Beneath its simplicity lies a reservoir of wisdom, encouraging readers to reflect on their own experiences and find strength in vulnerability. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone navigating the unpredictable tides of relationships or seeking inspiration in the face of adversity. Karen Hatch’s narrative is not just a recounting of personal trials but a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, offering hope and insight to all who turn its pages. May her words inspire you to embrace your own journey with grace and courage.

"I’m not even going to try to sound polished—I could NOT put this book down.
From the first few pages, I was locked in. But what really got me is how this book puts words to things people feel but struggle to explain—especially when it comes to emotional manipulation, deception, and relationships that don’t look broken on the outside but feel confusing and heavy on the inside.
This isn’t just storytelling—it’s clarity.
There were multiple moments where I had to pause and really think because it hits you like, ‘wow… that’s exactly what that was.’ The author does an incredible job breaking down experiences that are often dismissed or misunderstood, and she does it in a way that feels real, not textbook or watered down.
And what I love most? It’s not just about what she went through—it’s about what you can learn from it.

It gives you awareness, perspective, and honestly… a sense of power back.
You can feel the courage behind this book. It takes a lot to be this transparent, and she did it in a way that’s not only impactful but necessary.
If you’ve ever questioned yourself in a relationship, felt confused by someone’s behavior, or needed clarity on what you experienced—this book is going to hit home.
I’m beyond proud of the author. This is powerful, this is real, and this is absolutely a must-read.”
